AITSL standards
Curtin University’s initial teacher education programs offered through OUA include fully nationally accredited qualifications, such as the Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching. These nationally accredited programs enable graduates to register as a teacher with the relevant state or territory regulatory authority.
Part of the accreditation process involves demonstrating that the criteria of teacher competence as set down by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) are met by all graduates. These are known as the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. You can find out more about these on the AITSL website.
You will see that there is a particular set of standards and criteria statements for graduate teachers, and that expectations change as teachers become more experienced.
Our course assessments, tasks and activities are designed with these standards very much in mind.
Please note, Curtin University also offers a Graduate Diploma in Education award, which is approved by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA), but is not nationally accredited with AITSL. This means graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration in Western Australia, with potential for mutual recognition in some other states and territories.
